Citing the New York Times page, Lim Goh Tong was born in 1918 in Fujian, China. At the age of 19, Lim Goh Tong moved to Malaysia. Rapid developments in Malaysia after World War II boosted demand for supplies of ex-mining equipment for Lim's rubber plantations and mines. He also tried the construction business.

Lim Goh Tong has a wife named Lee Kim Hua, and six children namely Lim Siew Lay, Siew Lian, Siew Kim, Tee Keong, Kok Thay, and Chee Wah.

Based on the Forbes list in 2007, Lim Goh Tong was ranked the 204th richest person in the world. The value of his family assets reaches US $ 4.2 billion.

He also built Genting Highlands in 1965, and opened a casino in 1971. The casino is the flagship of an integrated area in Genting Highland that includes hotels, theme parks and shopping.
