Beautiful Scenery on Manukan Island, Sabah Malaysia
Manukan Island is
located in the state of Sabah, East Malaysia, not far from the waterfront of
Kota Kinabalu and easily accessible by boat.
Manukan is the most
popular island with the residents of Kota Kinabalu. Manukan has some great
stretches of beach on the southern coastline. Off the coast of Manukan are
coral reefs , which are ideal for snorkeling, diving and swimming.
Manukan
Island has the most developed tourist
facilities which include 20 villas, a clubhouse, and several restaurants and a
dive center.
Recreational
facilities include a swimming pool, soccer field, volleyball court and sepak
takraw. Infrastructure facilities include water-support, electricity,
desalination plants, sewage systems, and even solar-powered payphones.
Jesselton Point
Ferry Terminal in downtown Kota Kinabalu is the ferry terminal for those
heading to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. This ferry terminal
is also the departure point for customers staying at Manukan Island Resort.
It is located 38
kilometers (24 mi) west of Dipolog City , the provincial capital, and 282
kilometers (175 mi) northeast of Zamboanga City , the regional capital.
The word Manukan
means poultry farming. On June 16, 1951, through the efforts of former
Congressman (and later Senator) Roseller T. Lim with the assistance of Governor
Serapio J. Datoc of the former Zamboanga Province, President Elpidio Quirino
signed Republic Act no. 655 formed the municipality of Manukan. In 1952, the
barrios of Manukan, Lipras, Dipane, Linay, Mate, Sirongan, Libuton, Disakan,
Siparok, Ponot, and Manawan Katipunan became the town of Manukan.
Transportation
The main public
transportation to the island is by speedboat from Kota Kinabalu to the island
pier for about 20 minutes. The speedboat departs from the Kota Kinabalu Ferry
terminal (Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal) and the service operates from 08:30
to 16:15.
Accommodation
The main resort on
the island, Manukan Island Resort provides accommodation on the island. The resort
offers two restaurants which include the Perahu restaurant, which offers local
and international options and the Resort restaurant which serves breakfast and
for lunch.
