History

The Sailendra dynasty built Borobudur Temple around 780-840 AD, and was very powerful at that time. This temple was built as a place of worship for Buddhism and a place of pilgrimage. This place contains instructions so that humans can distance themselves from the lusts of the world and towards enlightenment and wisdom according to Buddhist beliefs. This temple was discovered by British troops in 1814 under the leadership of Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles. Then the entire area of Borobudur Temple was successfully cleaned in 1835.

Borobudur was built in the Mandala style which reflects the universe in Buddhist belief. The structure of this building is square with four entrances and a circular center point.

Behind the splendor of Borobudur Temple, many artifact hunters are interested in collecting it. The head of the statue is the most popular part. Therefore, many Buddha statues were found without heads.

Worse yet, the Dutch East Indies government also gave it voluntarily in 1896. Five Buddha statues along with 30 stones with 30 stone reliefs, two lion statues, guardian statues, stone stairs, and so on were given to the King of Thailand, Chulalongkorn. You can see the collection at the Bangkok National Museum.

As mentioned above, Borobudur archaeological artifacts have been scattered due to theft. In Indonesia, there are two museums to view the original collection, namely the Karmawibhangga Museum in the Borobudur complex and the Indonesian National Museum in Jakarta.

The international museum that houses the Borobudur collection is at the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam; British Museum, London; and the National Museum of Bangkok, Thailand.

In addition, there is also a museum that stores a collection of replicas. These include the Louvre Museum in Paris, the State Museum of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, and the Museum of World Religions in Taipei.
